Boys and Girls Basketball Season Recap
By Allison Neville
What a year for the Wildcats! The boys and the girls played a tough season of basketball. Boys' basketball coach, Mr. DaCorte, Cluster One, social studies teacher and girls' coach, Mr. Bredehorst, Cluster Five, Math teacher answered the following questions:
Neville: What first got you interested in the sport of basketball? Bredehorst: I have been playing basketball since I was five, in the streets of New York. DaCorte: I have always loved to play basketball. My dad really pushed me to play so he put a hoop outside of my house and ever since then I can remember playing. Neville: What made you want to coach the boys or girls basketball team here at WMS? Bredehorst: I decided to coach the girls' basketball team here at WMS because I have two daughters of my own. DaCorte: I decided to coach the boy's basketball team here at WMS because I really like being around the game of basketball. When there was a coaching opening, it was a perfect fit for me. I knew I could coach the game that I grew up playing and watching. Neville: Do you like or enjoy playing any other sports besides basketball? Bredehorst: I also enjoy playing soccer, tennis, handball, football, and softball. DaCorte: I love playing pretty much any sport. "I am a really competitive person." I love the competitiveness a sport brings. Besides basketball, my other favorite sport is golf, which I have been playing since I was three. All summer long I am either on the golf course or basketball court. |
Neville: Is there anything else you'd like to say, especially to the graduating eight graders from the team.
Bredehorst: Study Hard. Do Well. Have Fun. DaCorte: I would just like to say thank you. They put in a lot of really hard work this year and it paid off in the end with a 9-4 record. They are going to be missed next year. The girls’ team was made up of these following: (grade eight) Emily Belote, Daelyn Marrow, Anna Capparella, Sierra Santello, and Ashley Claudio; (grade seven) Tamra Gonyea, Gianna McKinney, Agatha Panek, Desire Bonilla, Jaylnne Nelson, Erionne Shields, and Mireyea Medina; (grade six) Jocelynn Rodriguez, and Zuliana Cannon. The coaches of Track and Field are Mr. D. Montemurro, special education teacher and Ms. Smith, physical education teacher. At practices Coach Smith works with the girls’ track team, while Mr. Montemurro does the same with the boys’ track team. They meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and some Fridays until 3:00PM. The practices are co-ed, but the meets are separate.
Last year’s Track and Field team had a great season. All the athletes worked really hard, “The whole team did a really great job.” Coach Smith said. She hoped this year's team would have good sportsmanship and they do!
When Ms. Smith held tryouts, she said that she was really excited, and she knows this season will be a great. Only the varsity teams participate in meets. We have only three meets total for the season. According to Coach Smith, "Our first two meets were April 30th and May 1st. Our last meet will be Tuesday, May 22nd, at Cheshire High against Dodd Middle School," she said.
