The Million Word Club
By The Globe Staff
Pictured here are four of our million word readers from left to right, Aramis Yan, Lexi Hines, Nick Jones and Jaetou Oritz, seventh graders. At Washington Middle School, students select books to read independently based on their Star Reading Level. Throughout the school year, they take an AR quiz on each of these books to earn points toward their assigned Accelerated Reader goal. The Renaissance Place program tallies the number of words per book students read. Once they read a million words, they qualify as a member of the Million Word Club. Currently, there are 101 members at Washington Middle School. If we beat Lincoln for the total number of million word members, students have the opportunity to see Mr. R. L. Montemurro, principal, wearing a blue wig. A celebration will take place June 12th, at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center, 4-7 PM. Winning students will be rewarded with sno-cones, popcorn, T-shirts and book bags. They will also have the opportunity to meet two local authors.
